Earth Day 2025 – How Clean Diesel Technology is Driving Sustainability

Asset 1-100Earth Day is a time to reflect on how we can make meaningful environmental progress, not just in the future, but right now.

The transportation industry plays a critical role in sustainability, and while the conversation often focuses on electric and alternative fuels, clean diesel technology remains a powerful and immediate solution for reducing emissions and improving efficiency for corporate transportation fleets. As we face the challenges of climate change, individuals, communities, and various industries must come together and work towards a better future.

Clean Diesel: A Consistent Path to Lower Emissions

The transportation industry has come a long way toward reducing its environmental impact. Thanks to ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel, advanced engine technology, and particulate filters, emissions of PM (particulate matter) and NOx (nitrogen oxides) have dropped by 98% since 1988. And with ongoing improvements in aerodynamics, idle reduction, clean idle standards, after-treatment systems, and increased fuel efficiency, today’s clean diesel engines are significantly cleaner than their predecessors. In fact, nearly half of all diesel-powered commercial vehicles on the road today are running on modern clean diesel technology, a critical step forward as fleets prepare for even stricter emissions regulations in the coming years.

There have been several regulatory shifts in recent months that seem to be continuously changing, but momentum continues to build.

  • CARB (California Air Resource Board) (CA plus 14 states)
    • ACT (Advanced Clean Trucks Rule) – Dealers in CA must sell a percentage of EVs

    • CARB Omnibus – Lower NOX levels than the EPA standard

      • EPA and CARB scheduled alignment in September of 2025 will now align with the EPA 2027 standards in CY 2027

    • ACF (Advanced Clean Fleet) – Waiver request was pulled back - not being instituted

  • EPA 2027 Omnibus - Implementation in CY 2027 (CARB will align)
    • Currently being reviewed by EPA for possible timing changes on implementation

Sustainability: More Than Just Fuelshutterstock_2615988497

Sustainability isn’t just about what powers the truck, it’s also about how fleets are managed. Companies prioritizing data-driven life cycle management strategies can significantly lower emissions and fuel consumption while keeping operations cost-effective. Shorter life cycles, preventive maintenance, and strategic asset management allow fleets to continuously integrate cleaner, more efficient technology without disrupting business operations. By replacing older diesel trucks with modern clean diesel models, fleets can cut emissions, improve fuel efficiency, and reduce environmental waste while ensuring reliability and reducing costs.

Building a Bridge to the Future

The shift toward alternative fuels is happening, but the path to sustainability isn’t one-size-fits-all. Clean diesel provides a practical, immediately available, and cost-effective solution for fleets looking to reduce their environmental impact today while preparing for the future.

This Earth Day, let’s recognize that sustainability is a journey that requires flexibility, innovation, and smart decision-making today. Clean diesel technology is a key piece of that puzzle, helping businesses drive toward a greener future one mile at a time.
